In the days when gas cost 25 cents a gallon, it was an easy decision which was the cheaper method of travel, flying or driving. Airfares out of large airports can be more expensive than out of smaller municipal airports, so if you are travelling to a large city, check smaller airports nearby. There is no doubt that the arrival of the so called "low cost airlines" have changed the face of short haul air travel & although it pains me to say it, as they have taken away a lot of my revenue, for the better in my opinion. I have been running my own travel business for over 12 years now, mainly dealing in discounted airfares. It used to be the case that if you wanted low cost airfares that you had to stay a minimum amount of time & especially a Saturday night. This was impossible for people who only wanted to travel for short periods, wanted to travel during the week or simply wanted one way travel. Now you can get low airfares staying as long or as little as you want, travel when you want & even for one way travel, this was unheard of only a few short years ago.
The low cost airlines & their low airfares have had a huge impact on air travel & peoples flying & holiday habits with more & more people now taking lots of short breaks instead of the traditional 2 weeks in the sun during the summer. As a result of this impact the long established Airlines are following suit in offering low airfares for travel for any durations & one ways.
We have all probably heard of or seen the ridiculously low airfares of £1 (or less ! ) plus tax to fly to many destinations across europe, but how do you get these low airfares ? Well I will tell you (although I'm not sure why ? )
First & foremost you must plan well in advance, 6-9 months or even longer if possible. The low cost airlines will generally have very low airfares for their lead in prices to grab your attention & get the headlines. Maybe the next fare level will only be £10 more so still a low airfare but again once a small amount of seats have been sold at this price the fare will rise again. This will keep happening until the fares are most definately not low airfares so it pays to book in advance. Lets face it at £1 or thereabouts plus tax if your plans change & you can't travel you are not loosing much are you ?
Next, get yourself on the e mail list of the low cost airlines such as Easyjet, Ryanair, Jet2, Bmibaby etc. They will then e mail you when their flights are about to go on sale for up coming seasons. This should enable you to get first pick of the low airafres when you want to travel. Familiarise yourself with the low cost Airlines that fly from your local airport & get on their e mail lists. You will find this information on your local Airports website.
If you are not sure where you want to go then try websites such as skyscanner where you will find a facility to find out where the low cost Airlines fly to from your local Airport including the low airfares. You may find yourself travelling to places you would not have thought of simply because you cannot pass up the low airfares to that destination.
Try travelling during the week or be flexible in when you want to travel, play around with dates on your low airfare searches & you may be pleasantly surprised at how much you can save.

Unless you happen to be wealthy and have a lot of free time, chances are you wish you could fly more often than you currently can. Airfare is, of course, the most cost prohibitive element of long distance travel. Many people find themselves in situations where they know someone they could stay with in another city - so accommodations would be free - but there's simply no way of being able to get there affordably. In terms of discount travel, there are some solutions to expensive airfares that are worth looking into if you are flexible and interested on a short visit rather than a long trip.
One of the cheapest ways you can fly is called courier flying. How this works is: courier companies exist that specialize in delivering relatively small packages quickly - things like important business documents etc. . . and what these companies want is your baggage allotment on a flight. So they will offer extremely discounted fares in order to get your baggage allotment.
If you sign up for a courier flight, your job will be to show up at the airport with carry on luggage only, meet someone with a package who will check it onto the plane in your space (you won't normally have to handle the package), and take the flight. In most cases you are required to take a return flight as well in a relatively short time (usually a few days, and rarely more than a month), which is why courier travel is more suitable to quick cross-country visits than long term travel.
Here are some samples of the approximate discounts on return fares, obtained through a simple internet search: New York to Paris, $250; Los Angeles to Sydney, $400. In some cases, if you are on their call list, the courier may become desperate with a last minute flight and offer it for free.
Now, with such extreme discounts, there must be a catch, right? Of course: courier flying would be simply too good to be true it didn't come with an extreme lack of flexibility. Courier flying works by placing yourself on a list to be contacted by the companies. You're not likely to receive much notice, and until you board the plane, your fate is entirely in the hands of the courier company: if there is a change or a problem with the package, for example, you're out of luck.
More so than other types of discount travel, courier flying is dependant on you being able to establish a repoire with the company. If you have been flexible and completed flights for a company in the past, you may be able to establish a relationship where they call you first to offer a flight, in which case you'll have some more options.
Regardless, to engage in courier flying you have to be very flexible, and although it is one of the most extreme forms of discount travel available, it remains fairly restrictive. If you're interested your best bet is to try one or two courier flights and hope that you can establish a good relationship with the company.

Budget travel is not just about finding ways to spend less. The point is to have just as much fun while spending less. Here are some tips to get you started, and afterwards, a suggestion on how to think about travel.
Are you considering a long trip? You may want to rent an apartment in an interesting city. We did this for two months in Tucson. It saved us at least $600 per month, compared to even the cheaper motels. It was fun to have a "home base" for our travels, from which we took day trips to Mexico and or up to Mount Lemmon, the furthest-south ski resort in the country. Many cities have apartments that are furnished and available on a month-to-month basis.
In general it is the traveling part of travel that costs the most. This is due to the cost of gas, convenient fast food, and the expensive hotels you are forced to pay for when you just can't drive any further. So if you find a place with a reasonable motel, and a lot to do in the area - stay for a while! We find that a place becomes more interesting when you have a few days to explore it.
Because of the growing popularity of RV (recreational vehicle) boondocking, the BLM has begun to establish areas for longer stays, particularly in Arizona. They have a permit fee is around $140 now. Although you can still park your RV for free on most BLM and National Forest land, paying for the fee areas means you get to stay up to six months (The free stays are limited to two weeks). For cheaper hotel rooms, use the coupon books at gas stations along the highways. We've almost always found good deals using these. It's rare that a manager won't honor the coupon. Generally, only if they're absolutely full will they refuse. Read the fine print, though. They often charge more for certain dates, or for two people.
The above is a good example of how to travel cheap without sacrificing a thing. The same room will often be $20 more without the coupon, and you have to stop for gas anyhow, so why not grab those coupon books? Save on a room for a few nights and you can pay for another day of vacation. Just keeping your eyes open for opportunities like this is one of the keys to budget travel.
